Step back, breathe ...

So ... it's time to look beyond the MLS listings. We haven't been looking at any "by owner" sales, so we've decided to give that a chance. That, and we now have a bit more time to look, as I'm not going to Sydney yet. As long as we have the house before Father's Day, we're fine. Less pressure ... always good.

Some asshole put a gigantic dent in my front passenger door. Very pissed about that ... other than that, no real news.

Hunt's not over. Midnight decision to withdraw the offer went through today ... we're back at square one. Blah.

The Hunt Ends?
Tuesday, 13 March, 2007, 01:42
During our house-hunting expedition on the 10th, I believe Julie and I found our first house. We're heading back over there to make an offer on Thursday. There are two possibilities, but they're very similar: both are townhouses, both have 3 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms, both have two-car garages, and both cost the same. One comes out to about $1000 more per year after taxes and assessments. That's the one we're going for, mainly because we get more of a "privacy" feeling out of it. The other one feels more like a "forced community" type of thing, and Julie and I aren't really "community" type people -- we like to keep to ourselves.

So ... offer on Thursday. I hope we get it. True, it's not our dream house, but we need some place to get started. It seems like the two places will be good for us and up to 2 kids; we don't plan on having kids for a while (4, maybe 5 years), so if I had to guess when we'd start looking for new housing again, I'd put it at about 10 years. Wish us luck :)

Weekend Update
Saturday, 3 March, 2007, 18:32
The house hunt continues ... not exactly the most successful hunt, I must admit, but it's continuing nonetheless. We saw 14 houses last week and are going to look at more next week, since Julie is working today and tomorrow. The search is narrowing down, though, and we'll probably end up being closer to Orland Park than to Des Plaines, if only because most of the listings we actually like are in that area.

We've finalized our wedding invitations as well (and I happened to leave the sample invitation at Bob's condo yesterday). They're a more modern design than what I would have expected -- the first time Julie and I went to look at invitations, we were looking at all of the "classic" designs, but I guess that changed :) They're very red, and the letters are easy to read so you know exactly what's going on, when, and where.

Jumping back in time to the February 12th post -- my upgrade attempt was a success, but I was kind of forced into Windows Vista. I installed the HighPoint card I had ordered, updated the system BIOS, and my computer totally forgot it had Windows XP. Luckily I had loaded Vista on that 250GB drive and was able to pick up pretty much where I had left off. I upgraded the CPU after that in order to extend my system's life (socket 939 is dead, so I just upgraded to dual-core and called it a day). I think this is probably the last upgrade I'll do on this particular computer -- my next desktop will most likely be an iMac, seeing how I use my MacBook Pro more frequently than my "main" machine.

On the work front, I met with a bunch of customers at our WMS conference back on February 23rd. I am running with implementations for three of the customers I met with; the fourth implementation on my plate is on hold because we don't have a signed license agreement yet.

That said, the week of February 26th was pretty crappy because, despite the fact that the customer in question decided to go live on the 23rd, they changed their minds and basically said "we'll go live when we're good and ready." While I see where they're coming from, I don't believe they're making the right decision -- they claim that the WMS software is not ready yet, but they were singing a completely different tune when we had the two WMS product managers on site. I am 100% convinced that they did not go live because their IT director did not want the extra burden of maintaining their newest server.

Tomorrow marks the 7th anniversary of my first date with Julie. It's been a wild ride to be sure, but things are falling into place and the wedding is in August. Good times. We decided that, after we're married, we are not going to celebrate the anniversary of our first date, but I highly doubt that will happen :) Similarly, I also doubt we will stop recognizing the anniversary of the day we first met, just because we're both total saps like that.

That's all I've got for today ... lots of text to chew on.
