I am the fireman

I put out so many freaking fires today, it's unbelievable. We released an update yesterday and told all customers to update. Unfortunately, some clients have improper database setups that cause the updates to fail. Curse those permissions, curse them! It was a solid freakin' wall from 6:45AM to 6:45PM. I'm glad I made it home in time for Bones

Lots of stuff this past week ... where do I begin?

The Fountainhead holiday party was on Friday. Good times were had by all. It was cool to hang out with everyone and not talk about anything work-related. There were 55 of us there ... of course, people brought guests (wives, girlfriends, etc.). I'm hoping the people who were doing shots before we left stayed at the hotel, though.

I ended up buying a "TV bench" from Ikea for the projector and game systems. Beats the hell out of having everything on 2 nightstands and a barstool, that's for sure. The thing has two sliding glass doors on the front of it, and has room for 4 devices, which is perfect: PS2, VCR, N64, and XBox. The projector and switchbox are on top of the thing (where the TV would go, if I were using it for its intended purpose).

Julie's phone started acting funky ... none of the buttons worked. Instead of trying to fix it, or getting an identical replacement, we went to the T-Mobile store, where she chose and received her new phone: a Samsung t309. While we were there (and getting fat discounts due to my 4 1/2 years of being with T-Mobile), I upgraded my phone to a Samsung e635. They have a speakerphone feature, which we had fun testing in the car :D

We plan on heading down to Millennium Park after lunch to do some skating. I know it's nearly 1AM, but I can plan, can't I? :D Julie's upstairs sleeping, while I'm updating Fountainhead's ASP clients (since they obviously can't do it themselves). There are currently two seperate ASP environments: one has 6 companies on it, and one has more than 40. I'm about halfway done with the second one, which is a good thing because I want to play jDoom before going to bed  Eventually, we'll move all of the ASP clients onto the "new" network (the one with 6 users), as the servers are faster ... they're using gigabit ethernet for that one as well, so the database and app servers can yell at each other more quickly :D

I don't mind doing these late-night updates as long as no users decide to sign on ... I'd rather just do the updates, start CargoWise on all of the app servers, and be done with it. Of course, every other time I do these updates some user has to connect at this ungodly hour. Then he gets a run-time error and throws a hissy fit ... well hey, we're not giving the app server users admin rights no matter how much they whine. Besides, who the hell books with a freight forwarder at 1AM on a Sunday?

I'm almost done doing the database part of the update, which is the long part. Yeah, it doesn't take that long to do the DB updates anymore. The guys at the office say that I'm learning quickly, and Jack has thrown me a small development project (more like, "fix this";), which will be awesome when I finish fixing it :D

Okay, it's time to start the updated app on the app servers. Thus ends my somewhat lengthy entry.
