Nopocalypse

The world was supposed to end a week ago today, but here I am, writing an entry for this website that nobody (or, at most, very few people) will see. You probably know this already, but I didn't think for a second that this Mayan Apocalypse thing would pan out. Even if you don't look at the scientific evidence against such an occurrence, you have to consider the fact that, while there are still Mayans around, they apparently didn't predict the downfall of their advanced civilization. Yes, there are Mayans still around -- the language isn't dead either -- but they're not seeing the future (or building interstellar vessels, for that matter).

One thing that is coming to an end, though, is 2012. There were good times, there were bad times, but it all washes out in the end, doesn't it? Monday night will be a time for eating, drinking, and having a good ol' time ... unless you're working, in which case, sorry.

Decembeard is upon us

I postponed the growing of my winter beard for one month. I'm glad I did because it's been pretty nice out, and a beard would have made my face somewhat uncomfortable. At any rate, I started the month with a freshly-shaven face and am going to refrain from touching it with a razor for a while. This is just for fun, though, not for anything charitable. I hope to look like I was hibernating in a cave for a while.

Movember 2012: Day 7

Growing a moustache seems a bit easier this year than it was last year. I'm not entirely sure why this is the case, but I suspect it's because people have seen me with one before and they have made the "oh, it's November again" connection.

I watched a video about the origins of Movember and couldn't say I was particularly surprised that its origins involved beer. I was, however, surprised to hear that the foundations that are currently supported by the charity were originally reluctant to jump on the bandwagon. Seems to me that a health problem that could potentially affect half the global population should receive more attention ... at least as much as the health problems that can affect the other half. Hell, I'd argue men's health should receive more attention at this point because, unfortunately, us guys tend to be a bit stubborn when it comes to our health. I'm guilty of being stubborn myself!

Have a look at this TED talk by Adam Garone, one of the founders of Movember. Get educated! Support men's health initiatives! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQvbKfEKLMI

...and, more importantly, check out my progress and donate if you're feelin' generous! http://mobro.co/aklinko

It's that time of year again.

Yes, Halloween is upon us. Adam has decorated the house while Julie and I are at work, Mario and Julie have matching costumes, my costume is delightfully simple and frightening to some citizens of the Internet, and Adam's Michael Myers costume is ready to go.

But that's not the time of year I'm talking about. Last year I participated in Movember, growing a moustache to rival the shadiest trucker's. I had originally planned to grow a winter beard starting the morning after Halloween, but I have postponed that plan until ... uh ... Decembeard, at which point I will shave the 'stache and start anew for the winter.

You can track my progress at the same page as last year -- http://mobro.co/aklinko. The picture I've uploaded as a starting point is pretty old, but let's face it, I look pretty much the same all the time so it's no biggie.

Autumn

Mario's second birthday was three weeks ago, and the rate at which he learns words, phrases, and actions has accelerated noticeably. He can name the animals on the flash cards we show him, and can name different types of vehicles; he has gained the ability to say things like "of course I can" and "want Whyatt" (when he wants to play the Super Why video game on Julie's phone); he can mimic the faces I make when crunching ice cubes, and knows that "time for a bath" means "we need to go upstairs, fill the tub, remove your clothes, and get in the tub."

The end of October is also upon us. I've decided, based on my participation in Movember last year, to grow a winter beard starting November 1st. I don't know if this disqualifies me from Movember -- after all, it shouldn't matter what's on the participant's face, as long as awareness (and funds) are raised -- but it will be cool.
